Charis
and HRH would love to speak
to your school!
Charis is the award-winning author of Kids
Who Rule:
The Remarkable Lives
of Five Child Monarchs,
nominated
for the Silver Birch Award 2008.
The
Book
They were queens. They were kings.
They were kids.
Kids Who Rule profiles five child rulers: King
Tutankhamun of Egypt; Mary, Queen of Scots; Queen Christina
of Sweden; Emperor Puyi of China and
the Dalai Lama of Tibet.
Each chapter opens with a dramatic episode and then tells the fascinating stories of their lives and the countries they ruled. Readers find out exactly what it was like to be a child king or queen, including the details of their daily lives and the challenges they faced.
An excellent learning
tool as well as a compelling read,
Kids
Who Rule has been critically acclaimed and nominated
for a Silver Birch Award. Thousands of children across
Ontario read the nominated books and vote for their favourites
as part of the Ontario Library
Association’s Forest of
Reading Program.
The Presentation
Using her background
as an actor and a touring member of Young
People’s Theatre,
Charis offers an entertaining and informative presentation.
It begins with a visit from Queen Elizabeth II, complete
with crown, gown, and royal attitude. Her Majesty shows
the children how to greet royalty with a quick lesson in
bowing, curtseying, and kowtowing. Then Charis takes over
and gives some background about how and why she wrote the
book. She asks the kids what they think life would be like
if they were a king or queen.
After introducing each of the monarchs in her book, Charis involves the students in a lively quiz game: Rule Your School. The game reveals interesting details about the royal kids in her book: where they lived, what they ate, what they wore, what they did for fun and what hardships they endured. Charis ends the presentation with an exciting reading from Kids Who Rule and a question period.
The presentation is recommended for grades 3–6.
It is ideally suited to one classroom of about 25 to 30 kids, but if you want two classes to attend, Charis will do it for a maximum of 50 kids.
Arrangements can be made to sell copies of Kids Who Rule to students either before the day of the presentation, or after Charis gives her talk. She will be happy to autograph copies for students.
